Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are complex, serious mental health conditions characterised by unhealthy and persistent disturbances in eating behaviours, thoughts, and emotions related to food and body image. Common forms include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, but all share core symptoms such as an intense preoccupation with weight, shape, and food, extreme control or avoidance of eating, frequent dieting, and severe emotional distress around eating.

Physically, signs may range from dramatic weight loss or gain, gastrointestinal issues, and menstrual irregularities to fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and other medical complications that can threaten overall health. Eating disorders not only disrupt daily life—leading to isolation, withdrawal from social activities, and hiding behaviors—but can also cause significant harm to relationships, self-esteem, and long-term physical and emotional well-being.

Hypnotherapy, especially the individualised and gentle approach of Eriksonian Hypnotherapy, offers a compassionate and empowering avenue for healing those affected by eating disorders. Instead of relying solely on conscious willpower or rigid behavioural instructions, hypnotherapy invites individuals into a natural state of deep relaxation where the subconscious mind becomes more open and receptive to positive change.

Through creative storytelling, indirect suggestion, and non-judgmental guidance, therapists help clients explore and resolve the underlying emotional conflicts and negative self-beliefs that fuel disordered eating. This personalised process allows clients to reconnect with their bodies, reframe harmful thought patterns, and develop healthier relationships with food and themselves. By strengthening inner resilience and self-acceptance, hypnotherapy can gently nurture motivation and hope, supporting lasting recovery and a more balanced, fulfilling life for those struggling with eating disorders.
